This schedule, spanning volumes 4 and 5 of Mark Twain’s Letters, lists Mark Twain’s known lecture appearances during his tour of 16 October 1871–27 February 1872. This tour, like his 1869–70 tour ( L3 , 483–86), was managed by James Redpath and George L. Fall of the Boston Lyceum Bureau. It included seventy-seven engagements throughout the East and Midwest, about two dozen more than in 1869–70. The primary sources consulted in recreating this itinerary were Clemens’s surviving letters and, especially, his lecture route notebook, provided by the lyceum bureau (Redpath and Fall 1871–72). Only the final two engagements, in Danbury and Amherst, are not listed in the notebook (which is cited explicitly here only when no independent confirmation of a lecture has been found). In a few instances, Clemens’s letters supply the sole confirmation of a notebook listing. In most cases, however, lecture engagements have been confirmed by announcements, reviews, or reports in local newspapers (unless otherwise indicated, a cited newspaper was published in the town or city where Clemens lectured).
