This schedule lists Mark Twain’s known lecture appearances from 17 November 1868, the start of the winter season, to 15 January 1869, the last date that his agent, G. L. Torbert, originally booked for his midwestern tour. (Torbert later added appearances, extending the tour until mid-February; Clemens finished his season with a lecture in Sharon, Pennsylvania, on 20 March.) For lectures confirmed by a newspaper announcement, review, or report, we cite the newspaper as our source. Unless otherwise indicated, newspapers cited for this purpose were published in the same town or city where Clemens lectured. When a lecture is known only through Clemens’s statement in a letter, we cite it as our source; all letters cited that are not published in this volume are in CU-MARK.

Clemens “broke an engagement” in an unidentified town to be in Elmira “from 7 p.m. 17th to 7 p.m. 18th” (24 and 25 Dec 68 to Fairbanksclick to open link).
Clemens was originally scheduled to appear in Dayton, Ohio, on 31 December (see 21 and 23 Dec 68 to OLL); he told Mrs. Fairbanks in his letter of 24 and 25 December that he would “skip Dayton for the present.”
Clemens mentioned in his letter of 2 Jan 69 to Olivia that he was originally scheduled to appear in Bloomington, Illinois, on 12 January.
