Explanatory Notes

William Penn Carpenter represented the Utica (N.Y.) Mechanics’ Association, for which Clemens lectured on 14 January 1870. He was a bookkeeper for J. S. and M. Peckham, a Utica stove company (“Mark Twain,” Utica Observer, 14 Jan 70, 3; Utica Directory, front flyleaf, 46). This letter survives in the papers of his son, philologist and educator William Henry Carpenter.
