Explanatory Notes
1

The check and statement were for fifth quarter (1 Aug–31 Oct 70) sales of The Innocents Abroad, amounting to about 5,000 copies (Hirst 1975, 317). Since the corresponding royalty would have been about $1,000, Bliss may have made some deductions, including the cost of books Clemens had recently requested (21? Sept 70click to open link, 28 Oct 70click to open link, and 29 Oct 70click to open link, all to Bliss).
