Explanatory Notes
1

The eleven o’clock appointment was with Isaac E. Sheldon or Francis P. Church, or both. In his subsequent meeting with Elisha Bliss, Clemens probably reported on his progress on Roughing It and answered Bliss’s objections to his commitments to Sheldon (27 Jan 71 to Bliss, n. 1click to open link; 27 Jan 71 to Sheldon, n. 1click to open link).

2

Bliss’s clerk misread the telegram’s date, which was poorly written.
