Clara Clemens Gabrilowitsch gave the letter to one Mrs. Seely on 26 April 1938 in place of an autograph of her father, as documented in a letter of that date in CU-MARK (UCCL 49868). The letter, together with an envelope postmarked 23 September 1884 (UCCL 11909), was purchased at the Sotheby’s sale of 19 June 2003 from the collection of Nick Karanovich. The envelope for the present letter was already in CU-MARK; its provenance is not known.
