Explanatory Notes
1 H. W. Bergen was the agent Clemens employed to travel with John Raymond and the Colonel Sellers road company to keep track of expenses and receipts. His last known communication with Clemens was a letter written on 10 April 1877 from Buffalo, in which he alluded to outstanding bills, reported Raymond’s promise to “raise part of his share at least,” and told Clemens that “if you send me your share I will take a receipt for it & that will clear you & make him entirely responsible for any balance that may be standing” (CU-MARK).
