Explanatory Notes
1 A reduction, that is, in the salary Clemens was paying H. W. Bergen as his financial overseer with the touring company of Colonel Sellers.
2 The Clemenses had left Hartford on 6 June. They were presently staying at the Elmira home of Mrs. Jervis Langdon, but planned to move to Quarry Farm, outside the city.
3 Marie Gordon, John T. Raymond’s wife, often took the part of Laura Hawkins in Colonel Sellers (19 and 25 Jan 1875 to Stillson, L6, 355 n. 1).
