Dr Sir—

Just back from New York. I have a letter from you (with insurance estimates) end of June, reminding me of the $150, which I immediately answered, & supposed I enclosed the check of which the enclosed is the stub. You wrote me 7 days later, about interest deposits (at (date July 7 6) reminding me again, but I judged you had received the check by that time. I enclose another check, now, for $150. Pleaseemendation inquire at the bank what ever became of the former check. I have a great dread on my soul that you collected it while in a state of hot Scotch whisky, & then forgot all about it. I know all how that is, by experience.1explanatory note

All well here & send love to the Perkinses.

Explanatory Notes
1 The $150, due on 1 July 1877, was for Perkins’s legal services from January through June. Perkins acknowledged receipt on 6 August and reported that he had never received, nor had the bank deposited, any previous check. “Possibly ‘hot scotch’ may have affected the sending—instead of receiving!” he commented (Perkins to SLC, 28 June 1877, 6 July 1877, 30 July 1877, and 6 Aug 1877, all in CU-MARK).
