Explanatory Notes
1 The letter to which Clemens replied is now lost, but presumably it concerned the
search for an agent to accompany Parsloe on tour and forward the proceeds from
Ah Sin (Parsloe to SLC, 10 Aug 1877, CU-MARK). In a letter to Clemens of 20
August, Parsloe endorsed Maze Edwards, calling him “thoroughly competent,” but
pointed out that Edwards’s employer, Horace Wall, would have to consent. By 25
August that had been accomplished, and an agreement was drawn up, stipulating that
Edwards would receive forty dollars a week and transportation costs (Parsloe to
SLC, 20 Aug 1877, CU-MARK; Parsloe and Edwards to SLC, 25 Aug 1877, CU-MARK).
