Explanatory Notes
1 Clemens enclosed a check to Davies and Company for $112, to cover the cost of the
engraving, customs duty, and shipping charges.
2 Perkins conveyed these instructions on 19 October, with Clemens’s check. Davies and
Company confirmed receipt of his payment on 23 October, and informed Clemens that
they had sent the engraving to A. D. Vorce, a Hartford art dealer. Vorce wrote on
25 October, “We think of putting it up in good style & expose it for sale at a moderate
price” (Davies and Company to SLC, 23 Oct 1877, CtHMTH; Vorce to SLC, 25 Oct 1877, CU-MARK).
