Textual Commentary
Source text(s):

partial transcript, Doris Harris Autographs sales catalog, May 1981, no. 25, item 19, is source text for the letter; correspondence card, CU-MARK, is source text for the enclosure. There are two known states of the correspondence cards that Clemens used in 1881: “state A” has a monogram in the upper-left corner; “state B” has no monogram. The sales catalog describes a “‘SLC’ monogram correspondence card,” or “state A” correspondence card. The facsimile of the “state A” correspondence card provided with this letter was originally addressed to Bradford Dudman, 29 July 1881.
