Dear Charley—

So it appears that the scrap book sales have fallen off just one half in the past six months;—i.e. from 50,000 copies a year, to $28,000.

I return to you Slote’s ck,—make it a loan to K. Co. for use in K Eng. Co business. Send Perkins a note for it.

O, I’ll tell you about that $1000.71. The firm owed it to me on Scrap-book y royalties when they failed. It seems to me that they owed me $2000—that is, a whole year; but I am absolutely sure they owed me a half-year’s royalties. But haven’t you stated the figures incorrectly? You put it $1000.71/1000 emendation—my recollection is 100 $1071.00/100.—you see?—seventy-one dollars instead of cents.

I am so anxious to see the brass plates that I believe I will telegraph for them.

Textual Commentary
Source text(s):

MS, Jean Webster McKinney Family Papers, Special Collections, NPV. The MS is inscribed with three different writing media: Clemens wrote the letter in dark blue ink; someone practiced three capital Ts in cursive above the letterhead and arithmetical sums below the signature with a pencil; someone filled in the letterhead dateline and made a doodle below the date with dark brown ink. Only the illegible characters entered into the letterhead have been transcribed.
