17 July 1881 • Branford, Conn. (MS: LNT, UCCL 01985)
The book has come; I read it last night, & the charm of it, & the pain of it, & the deep music of it are still pulsing through me. I could echo Howells’s strong admirations, now, if he were here. (He spent a day with me last week, & we had much pleasant talk of you & your books.) Howells is still in the mind to go to New Orleans with me in November for the Mississippi trip, & we shall hope to see you then. Maybe you could find time to visit a Creole camp with us.
With sincere thanks, I am
