My Dear Osgood—
Here is an article which I have been three years building. Scribner’s folks have asked for an article, & I was going to send them this; but I reflected, & this is the result: this must go into the North American Review, else every ass of a reader will believe I invented these things, instead of experiencing them. That would simply exasperate me. The subject is entirely worthy of the Review; & besides I have treated it with the seriousness which it devserves. Won’t you send it to the Review for me? If they don’t want it, then we’ll go to the Century—but not otherwise. I want to “simultane” it with some grave enough London magazine, or with one of Chatto’s magazines, & also with the Australian Review—we forgot all about simultaning when we traded sold to Scribner before.—so we unintentionally left Chatto out, that time.
Ned House has got some awfully curious instances, & I want him to write & print them. S They musn’t be lost. Will you tell him?
I’ve got some more myself—going to make another article, by & by.
