there is not much to say about mrs. clemensesⒶemendation case. i am not sure that she is any further ahead than she was when you were here. she has no disease, now, but then she has no appetite. consequently she gains no strength, but stands still; that is, lies still, mainly. however, as soon as she shall be able to travel on a mattress, i shall take herⒶemendation to elmira, n.y., and see if her mother can nurse her back to health.
i hope you will require money in advance. mere written guaranty of those thieves is worth nothing. they will leave a loop-hole in the writing through which their small souls can creep.
i shall be at the authors club and the salvini banquet in case mrs. clemens is well enough to spare me—a doubtful outlook. mrs. clemens and i send warmest regards to you and mrs. cable.
