I have long had doubts—but not certainties—as to whether I could come down to you & the Salvini; so I have waited to see. Yesterday it became plain to me that I should have to remain at home—wherefore I sent Osgood word. We have a professional nurse, but I am the main nurse, & must not leave the deck until I can better be spared than at present. Mrs. Clemens is gathering strength, & is steadily improving—sits up some, now—but needs & requires constant looking after. It is the slowest improvement I ever saw.

I am extremely sorry I am to lose your hospitality the 25th—it goes without saying—but I hope & expect that you & the rest will have a good time.
