Dear Mr. Carleton:

I think you have got the wrong idea of it. In my opinion it isn’t mainly a “humorous work” at all. I have read it through, with great care & interest, & am convinced that it is something much better than a humorous work, in that it is a fine & stately & beautiful tragedy. And so I think you will do well to revise & reverse your hasty judgment—a result which must surely follow, if you will sit down & rereademendation your work with right attention & an unprejudiced mind.
