{1014} “TWAIN (MARK,” SAMUEL L. CLEMENS, 1835–1910).

Autograph Letter Signed “S. L. Clemens,” to Major General Mervyn Drake. 2 pages, 8vo. Hartford, 9 October, 1884. With addressed envelopeemendation.

After commencing with 6½ lines in German, Mark Twain continues:—

“ . . . (Please to hurl that at the unbelieving Ihneemendation and ask him what’s the matter with it). I remember Professor Ihneemendation very well, because he hadn’t ever heard of me, & it wounded my feelings. . . . I am trying to persuade my wife to say we shall pack up our household tribe & spend next summer at the Schloss Hotel and then I will furnish you some picturesque samples of German if you are there.”
