To William Dean Howells
17 October 1884 • Hartford, Conn. (MS, in pencil: MH-H, UCCL 03008)
My Dear Howells—

Yes, give Osgood the MS—I haven’t the least objection. I am about half glad that Laffan beat him at billiards the other day, because he promised to stop over here & play with me, & didn’t do it.

I m I notice that Mrs. Howells mentions Cable. Privately—she mustn’t do anything on our account. I venture this impertinence with misgivings that I am taking too much of a liberty; & if this instinct is unhappily correct, I sl hope she will forgive, & forget that I said anything. My only excuse is that I was af thought— —well, dam it you know what I thought.

By George, the refreshment & rest there is in a change of air & scenery once in a while! I am to preside at a Mugwump meeting Monday night.

Yrs Ever
Mark.
