Dear Ben—

I enjoy your letters ever so much, & w am exceedingly thankful to get them, for I like to hear all about Flash & the cats & all the rest of the family. Now comes a secret. If a little birth-day present comes to mamma about Wednesday, you can tell her you don’t know for certain who sent it. And if it doesn’t come, you can write & tell me so, privately.

Mr. Beecher & Dean Sage & his wife & father were in the audience last night in Brooklyn, & also a Miss Copelin from St Louis who sent a note to me & I went to see her, & she was the daughter of a young girl I once knew. She said she was 21; & w her mother was only 15 when I used to know her; & I never had seen this daughter before. It made things seem a long time ago, & also made me feel very old & useless.

I love you, sweetheart.

Papa.
