Dear Sir:

I hurried all I could, but it was a very very severe up strain upon that part of my bowels which is called my intellect, & I perceived long ago that I had not asked for time enough on that problem by as much as two years. Well, there is another & a longer world, & I will think it out there. It is not one of these mere ephemeral questions, anyway.

Truly Yours

Provenance:

Offered for sale by Paul C. Richards, 22 Nov 1966; on 13 March 1967 MTP received a copy from Victor Jacobs, whose collection was eventually sold by Sotheby’s on 29 Oct 1996; the letter was purchased by Copley Library which was in turn sold by Sotheby’s, lot 496, on 17 June 2010; finally, purchased by the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, very likely from that sale of the Copley holdings.
