my dear brown,

you may be sure we were grateful for those photographs of a room whose aspect was so familiar to us and with which we have so many loving associations. we thank you very cordially.

i think it quite likely that i have sent you a picture of our youngest villain, but i am not at all certain. however, a body had much better have two pictures of jean clemens than none at all; therefore i inclose, not a heliotype but an artotype, printed with common printer’s ink on a plate made from a photographic negative. the process is similar to the heliotype process, but differs from it in some respects.
