29 October 1882 • Hartford, Conn. (MS: StEdNL, UCCL 08906)
I am a long time answering: but the particular picture of Susie which we wanted, could not at first be found. Finally when it was found, & placed on my writing table, it got buried under manuscripts & other rubbish; & then a press of work presently made me forget the whole matter.
We prefer this picture to any other that has been taken of Susie, because of the characteristic earnestness & interestedness of it. It isn’t as good looking as Susie is, but that is a matter of minor importance.
I am going to enclose a picture of my own. It is printed from a plate cast from a photographic negative, by the heliotype process.
Mrs. Clemens joins me in kindest regards, & in the hope that we may see you under our roof one of these days, where you will be cordially welcome.
