Charles Henry Webb, humorist and publisher of Clemens’s first book, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, And other Sketches (SLC 1867a), was born 24 January 1834. Clemens long harbored ill feeling toward Webb over his management of the book (8 April 1875, L6 , 443 n. 1).
