Explanatory Notes
1 

“The American Vandal Abroad,” based on The Innocents Abroad, was the lecture that Clemens delivered in the season of 1868–69.

Earlier Clemens had insisted that societies be advised of changes in his advertised lecture (15 Sept 71 to Redpathclick to open link). Fearing that the bad press received by the Artemus Ward lecture might discourage audiences from attending and discovering the replacement, Redpath and Fall ignored his present instruction (see the previous letter, n. 2).
