Explanatory Notes

The allusion to Twichell (“Jo’s . . . story”) suggests that this note—written on a 4.5 × 5 inch sheet of paper and clearly intended for an autograph collection—may have been written to Joseph O’Hagan (but see the previous letter, n. 6). Twichell’s story has not been recovered.
