Inscription in SLC 1875, Goodspeed’s Book Shop catalog, sale of unknown date, no. 250, ix. The undated Goodspeed catalog reproduces an entry from a 1909 Goodspeed catalog, which omits the title of the book, indicating that it was a “First Edition. | Presentation copy, with inscription on fly-leaf: ‘To C. W. Stoddard, from S. L. Clemens, 1877.’” As presentation copies to Stoddard of first editions of Clemens’s other books are accounted for, this one was almost certainly a copy of Sketches, New and Old (SLC 1875).
The catalog’s italics have been rendered here as roman type. The lineation and punctuation of the text are adopted from two of the other books inscribed to Stoddard in October 1877, UCCL 09289 and UCCL 09281.
