To Isabella B. Hooker
27 May 1884 • Hartford, Conn. (MS: CtHSD, UCCL 10482)
Dear Mrs. Hooker—

Mrs. Clemens & I have conferred together, & decided that if you can get the necessary subscriptions you may hold us responsible for fifty dollars a year toward your proposed salary. We should be very glad to make it more, but are forced to go according to our ability, not our inclinations.

Very Truly Yours
S. L. Clemens

P. S. I write in Livy’s place because I am idle for the moment & she is very busy.
