Explanatory Notes
1

Clemens wrote his note at the bottom of a bill from William K. Holt, a Hartford flour dealer, either on the day he mailed it or possibly the day before (Geer 1872, 79). The envelope address shows that he sent it either to Orion or to Mollie (see 20 or 21 July 72 to MEC, n. 3click to open link).

2

The Haxall flour mill, founded by Phillip and William Haxall in 1809, was in Richmond, Virginia (Kuhlmann, 48–49).
