20 February 1875 • Hartford, Conn. (MS: CLjC, UCCL 11540)
Confound it, my Boston trip is knocked in the head. It would take so long to explain why, that I’ll not attempt it, but only send regrets, do some private cussing, & wish the dinner party a happy time & Aldrich & family godsend & a glorious tour.1explanatory note
Clemens again declined Osgood’s invitation to a dinner at the Nautilus Club, now rescheduled for 24 February (12 Feb 75 to Osgood, n. 6click to open link). Aldrich and his wife sailed for Europe on 24 March, leaving their two young sons with relatives. They toured England, France, Italy, and Germany before returning home in October (Greenslet, 117–19; Lilian W. Aldrich, 161–62).
