Explanatory Notes

Clemens again declined Osgood’s invitation to a dinner at the Nautilus Club, now rescheduled for 24 February (12 Feb 75 to Osgood, n. 6click to open link). Aldrich and his wife sailed for Europe on 24 March, leaving their two young sons with relatives. They toured England, France, Italy, and Germany before returning home in October (Greenslet, 117–19; Lilian W. Aldrich, 161–62).
