The MS, laid in a first edition copy of Mark Twain’s Speeches (Harper and Brothers, 1910), was sold in 1954 to Seven Gables Bookshop (New York City) as part of the collection of Byron Price (City Book Auction); it was deposited at ViU by Clifton Waller Barrett on 16 April 1960.

Explanatory Notes
1 

This postscript, clearly an addendum to the previous letter to Lee, was probably mailed in a separate envelope. Clemens wrote it on a new sheet of paper, in spite of the fact that he had inscribed the earlier letter on the first page of a four-page folder, leaving three blank pages available for a postscript.
