Clemens sat for this photograph by Mathew Brady on 8 July 1870. No photographs of Olivia are known to have been taken in 1870 or 1871 ( L4 , 167, 168 n. 3, 374, 375 n. 2, 398 n. 1, 496).

MS facsimile, on the front and back of a photograph of Clemens. The editors have not seen the MS, which is in the Franklin J. Meine Collection, Rare Book and Special Collections Library, University of Illinois, Urbana (IU-R).
