Explanatory Notes
1

David S. Brooks, David B. Brooks, and Henry P. Brooks were manufacturers of household iron and copper ware, and dealers in sinks, furnaces, stoves, marble and slate mantels, and tin roofing (Geer 1876, 39, 202). Clemens’s purchase has not been identified. A member of the firm—possibly Brooks himself—wrote “Paid Aug 12th 1876 | D S Brooks Sons | B” below Clemens’s message, and mailed the “receipted bill” back to him in Elmira in an envelope postmarked 14 August, on which he wrote, “Brooks & So | Aug 76 | pd.”
