The autograph book belonged to Major Charles D. A. Loeffler, who served as White House doorman 1869–1909, and after Taft’s election was kept “on full army pay” and “held in reserve for other duties at the White House” (“Changes at White House,” New York Times, 4 Mar 1909, 3). After Loeffler’s death the book was inherited by his son, Senate Secretary Carl A. Loeffler, who still owned it in 1947 (William S. White, “Old Guard of the Old Guard,” New York Times, 8 June 1947, SM27).
