illustration] Gneiting has identified a Julia Margaret Cameron photograph of Tennyson, used as
the frontispiece for
the 1874–1875 edition of the poet’s works and famous as the “Dirty Monk” portrait,
as the
basis for this illustration. Since he had already used Tennyson’s face for his pictures
of Merlin, Beard altered his
features here (“Picture and Text,” pp. 238, 241).
