[Headnote]
This table lists all substantive readings in the first American edition which are rejected from the present text, thus completing the record of variants between the first American edition and the copy-text begun in the emendations list. It also records all substantive readings in the prospectus, the Century magazine excerpts, and the first English edition which vary from the first American edition.
The following symbols are used to refer to texts collated:
MS ManuscriptMalory Globe edition of Morte Darthur
Cent Century magazine
Pr Prospectus
A First American edition
E First English edition
I-C This edition (Iowa-California)
Unless this table records a variant, the prospectus, the Century, and the first English edition agree with the first American edition; emendations listings are repeated only when the prospectus, the Century, or the first English edition vary at the same point. Texts that agree substantively do not necessarily agree in all their accidental or stylistic features: in the entry at 136.4, for example, the first English edition reads “disembowelled,” not “disemboweled.”
