Textual Commentary
Provenance:

See Paine Transcripts in Description of Provenanceclick to open link.

Paine or his typist also recorded “Letter from S. L. C. Recd April 28.76.” Although the information was probably taken from the postmark of an untranscribed envelope, it is possible that at least part of it represents a docket.

Explanatory Notes
1

By this date Orion and Mollie Clemens evidently had given up their Keokuk chicken ranch and were now living in the town itself, where Orion attempted to establish a law practice (see L6 , 463 n. 8, 519–20). He had proposed this latest change of occupation in January (CU-MARK):

My Dear Brother:—

Are you willing to lend me five hundred dollars a year for two years, while I try to get into the practice of law?

Your Brother,
Orion.

P. S. I can succeed.

If Clemens agreed to this proposal, he was sending Orion about forty-two dollars per month.
