Explanatory Notes

Henry C. Lockwood of Baltimore, inventor of an “elastic waist strap,” had secured an interest in the manufacture of Clemens’s adjustable garment strap as a result of his patent dispute with Clemens in the fall of 1871. Bliss was charged with pursuing the strap’s manufacture, which was never accomplished; nothing is known of his dealings with Lockwood ( L4 , 465–66 nn. 1, 5).
