Explanatory Notes
1

Whelpley (1831–1900) was born in New York City, but moved to Cincinnati in the 1850s. He was associated with the publishing house of Robert Clarke Company, primarily as a salesman, until 1886, when he became the librarian of the Cincinnati Public Library. Upon his death he left a large collection of letters, poems, and other material by well-known nineteenth-century political and literary figures. Many of the letters, such as this one, were addressed personally to him (Greve, 2:440–41; Cincinnati Public Library, 87).
