Explanatory Notes

Clemens replied to a second telegram from Raymond, still in Utica, which was received by the Hartford telegraph operator at 2 a.m. on 13 May: “Will you lend me fifteen hundred dollars until October first one per cent a month if so send to Elmira” (CtHMTH). Clemens recorded his answer, probably also sent as a telegram, on the back of Raymond’s message.
