Explanatory Notes
1 This letter has been conjecturally dated 2 August, the day Clemens wrote from Hartford to George M. Fenn; no evidence has been found that he was in Hartford at any other time in August 1877.
2 Clemens, writing from his study with a “schoene Aussicht” (beautiful view), replied to a request from Paul Alexander Apfelstedt (1849–1933), an autograph collector in Frankfurt, Germany (Budan 1900, 276).
