In a letter of yours a year old, I have accidentally run across this sentence appended to a remark about the First edition of Tom Sawyer. “The telegrams sent you by me are not included of course, & I am sorry to say my books are confused about these said telegrams. As well as I can make out they amount to £2.11.0 which with 16s paid for carriage of picture plates and telegrams to Chatto in emergencies would amount to about £3.10.s. But this is subject to your reccollectionⒶemendation of the telegrams I sent you & need not be considered of importance.” When I came across that sentence, it struck me as likely as not I had forgotten to write you anything in answer to it.1explanatory note So I thought I would drop you a line now & say that if this matter never has been settled, I wish you would take that £3.11.s out of the next Sawyer money due me from Chatto. Of course I ought to have written you at the time & said this—possibly also I did do it, but to make things perfectly certain I do it now. All well here, & send kindest regards.
