beginning of letter omitted

I thank you ever so much for sending me the book, &emendation this whole nation ought to thank you for writing it. It is the record, bravely set down, of a most brave life, an excellent life, a high &emendation great life, a life with nothing in it to regret or to wish obliterated. The book sets one in the midst of the scenes it paints, &emendation makes him hope, despair &emendation exult by turns, &emendation by turns curse &emendation blaspheme. I read it when it first came out, &emendation am not wholly quieted down yet; neither do I wish to be, for it is wholesome to be stirred, so I shall read it again now.
