Explanatory Notes
1

Anson and Edward Burlingame left Honolulu on 7 July on the “Bark Swallow” for Yokohama, on the first leg of their journey to China, the day Clemens signed and dated his carte de visite and gave it to one or both of them, perhaps at the dock (Burlingame 1866; see 21 June 1866click to open link to JLC and PAM, notes 5 and 7).
