Borrowed of the above recently with instructions to be very careful of it—which I have done up to the present moment when I transfer it to Mrs. Lily Warner, against her will. Do also transfer to her all responsibility appertaining to the book.1explanatory note

The day before Clemens and his family left for Elmira to spend the spring and summer, he wrote this note “on the front page” of an unidentified book of Twichell’s, “beneath Twichell’s signature” (Cyril Clemens 1932, 35). Lilly Warner eventually returned the book to Twichell, whose family still owned it in 1932.

The unidentified book in which the letter was written remained in the Twichell family until at least 1932.
