And in a letter subsequently received he expresses himself as being exceedingly sorry that he had caused the disappointment, and desirous of lecturing before the people of Geneseo at a future date, which he fixed at March 1st, and which the Association accepted.1explanatory note
Clemens probably wrote this letter on the same day he sent the preceding telegram. Apparently in a later letter—written between 23 and 25 February, while he was in New York before and after lecturing in Trenton, New Jersey—he asked the Young Men’s Association to hold his mail until he arrived in Geneseo (see 2 Mar 69 to OLLclick to open link).
