Explanatory Notes
1

A book on child rearing and family life by Horace Bushnell (1802–76), the eminent Hartford Congregational clergyman. The Clemenses wanted it because Olivia was now about three months pregnant. It is likely that Clemens wrote to Scribner and Company, at 654 Broadway in New York, who had issued several printings of it since 1861 (Wilson 1870, 1092).
