Explanatory Notes
1
This brief paraphrase has been dated 8? October on the assumption that Lee responded immediately to the previous letter, requesting tickets to the upcoming Sandwich Islands lecture and inviting Clemens to dinner on Friday, 10 October (see the next two letters).
Paraphrase, Rains Galleries, lot 109. The letter was written on a postcard, presumably identical to the one described in the commentary for 4 Oct 72 to Leeclick to open link.
L5 , 450.
When offered for sale in 1937 (Rains Galleries) the MS was laid in a first edition copy of Is Shakespeare Dead? From My Autobiography (Harper and Brothers, 1909).
